In these years there were no Fleers, Topps, Upper Deck or other card manufacturers producing basketball sets other than The Star Company. But Nike did produce an oversized card recognizing Michael Jordan. Some consider the 1985 Nike to be the true Michael Jordan rookie card. And issued in the first year of Michael’s NBA career, this is with some justification. This is in contrast to his 1986 Fleer card which is universally accepted as his rookie card but was issued in his third year of play. For many years, the 1984-85 Star Company card #101 was in fact considered his rookie card. But for reasons noted elsewhere, this Star card fell out of favor with collectors and is not graded by either BGS or PSA.
What you see below is a rare sight: not only a Jordan Nike BGS 9.5 and a PSA 10, but also a BGS 10 one of two. The latter is spectacular. Only about one quarter of one per cent of all cards submitted and graded by Beckett have a BGS 10 grade. You will see several more BGS 10’s as you view this collection, but this is the earliest graded BGS 10 Michael Jordan card ever. You can see that the outline silhouette of Michael “flying” to the basket ultimately became the basis of the logo for the Nike Michael Jordan brand of products.
