CHICAGO BULLS YEARS
1986-87

According to Beckett’s 13th Edition Price Guide, the 132-card standard-size set issued in this year marked Fleer’s return to the basketball card industry after a 25-year hiatus. It also marked what is considered to be the beginning of the modern era of basketball cards. Since only the Star Company had been issuing basketball cards nationally since 1983, most of the players in this Fleer set already had cards which were considered Extended Rookie Cards. However, since this Fleer set was the first nationally distributed through wax packs since the 1981-82 Topps issue, most of the players in the set are considered Rookie Cars including Michael Jordan. The Guide continues by pointing out that some of the expensive cards in this set (especially Michael Jordan) have been counterfeited in the past few years. The cards are also condition sensitive due to dark borders and centering problems.

#1/1 1986 Fleer #57 BGS 10

#1/1 1986 Fleer #57 BGS 10

It took 20 years for this card which is the Holy Grail of all MJ card collectors to be discovered. It was graded a perfect pristine on March 30,2006, and is the only BGS 10 in the world. ‘“In the basketball hobby, there is no more recognizable card,” said BGS Senior Manager Mark Anderson, who was one of several senior graders to review the card as quoted in Becket Buyer’s Guide of April 3, 2006. This is the first and only BGS 10. It was found at the Sun-Times Show in March, 2006, in a PSA 10 condition and crossed over to a BGS 10. As reported on Beckett’s Sports Noise on May 9, 2006, Mike Souza, a card investor and collector in San Diego, sold this card for $150,000.00.

This is the only card in this collection that is not owned outright. It is displayed here with the express approval of the owner.

It also took 20 years to discover this BGS 9.5 which was graded on April 13, 2006, and is also the top such graded card in the world. Note that with two 10 subgrades and two 9.5 subgrades, it is only one half grade away from being a perfect pristine BGS 10. BGS has encapsulated 3,219 of the 1986 Fleer #57 of which only 52 have grade Gem Mint 9.5. PSA has encapsulated 11,162 of this card of which only 110 have graded Gem Mint PSA 10.

BGS has graded 1,862 and PSA 6,501 of these Fleer Sticker cards. These cards are frequently found off-centered and most card backs are found with wax stains due to packaging. The scarcity of the Fleer stickers in Gem Mint condition in both BGS and PSA is probably the one most important factor that makes this collection so rare.
